Could Team Cohesiveness Be The Issue?

I think that  part of the Phils woes as of late is just that. How many days thus far in the season have they played as a full team? Since I’m not a statistic person, I don’t have those exact figures in front of me. I also believe that the answers and worth of the team is not in statistics alone. Think of the numerous injuries that have plagued the team and hurt every part of the teams structure. Let’s review from what I can remember.

Pitching- Blanton was on the DL for the beggining part of the season. JA Happ has been on the DL for quite some time now. That’s two of their starters.

The bullpen- JC Romero and Lidge were both on the DL and both of them just recently came back. Madson has been on the DL ( self inflicted injury at that) for awhile. When will he return healthy? Who knows?

Offense/ Defense (Starters)- Rollins being off and on the DL is a major loss. Hopefully, he’ll come back tonight fully recovered. Polanco was absent off and on due to a hit to his elbow by a pitch. Werth has sat out  a game more than once.  Ruiz has been off and on the DL.

The Bench- Castro was on the DL. Schneider was out for a few games. ( Remember both Ruiz and he were down at the same time and there was a minute possibilty that Werth may have been their back-up)

One of the key factors for the success of this team has been working cohesively as a team. Every sector of the team worked with each other to win games. Injuries has taken their toll  and it takes awhile for the team to come back together after such splintering.

Just as an aside is that too much emphasis has been paid to some key players namely Halladay, Howard and Rollins. The Phillies have never put on a pedestal one player before but Halladays great pitching arm and our aquisition of him, Howard’s lucrative and early contract extension and the absense of Rollins has played prominent in the headlines. One player does not make a team. It’s the performance and teammanship of all your players that make a success.

Didn’t think I have anything to blog about today but I did. There’s always something to write about.I know that I’ve become weary of reading and writing about the many problems that the Phils have faced this season but I haven’t touched base (pun) on this subject so I bring it to you today. I know the Phils are great and will power through better than they’ve ever been. I believe in them.

    Barb,
    You have something there.
Some people call it “chemistry” some call it “character”, but if it is lacking, the confidence level goes down like oil through a funnel.
Some say a swift kick in the rear is the answer, while others teach patience. Knowing Good old Charlie M., I can see a combination of both being applied real soon.
    Great post.

Barb, it’s definitely a probability, they have played extremely well when they are at full strength, we just have to hope Ruiz is a minimum stay on the DL…

i think all the phillies need is rollins back in the lineup and they can start getting better. jroll is the guy who motivates everyone and keeps the team on track and not stressed. with rollins back in the lineup tonight, hopefully that phillies can start getting back to their normal selves. i mean, they’ve been through worse.
