How ’bout that Kyle Kendrick?

Someone used the saying last night to described Kendrick’s pitching performance “Like opening a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get”. I guess that’s true. The joke wasn’t on him though last night.

Back to back fine performances by our Phils pitchers were a joy to behold. I love it. Kendrick was up against Andy Pettitte but did not waver.

The offense powered through in the fourth with a single by Victorino, Polanco safe at first with a fielders error by Pena,  a single by Howard scored Victorino and gave the Phils their first run.

In the fifth inning,  Ruiz walked and Victorino hit a homerun scoring both Ruiz and himself bringing the score to 3-0.

Throughout all of this, both Werth and Polanco made spectacular plays defensely keeping the Yankees to one run.

Kendrick pitched 7 innings. Contreras came into the 8th and make a spectacular play of his own catching a hard hit ball behind his back .

Top of the 9th, the Phils bats came alive once more with a Ruiz double, a Valdez single scoring Ruiz, Valdez then steals second, Victorino walks, Polanco hits a sacrifice fly to score Valdez, Utley walks, Howard hits a sacrifice fly to score Victorino,Utley steals second, Werth walks, and Ibanez then hits a double scoring Utley. All of this resulted in 4 runs for the Phils just like old days for them!

Contreras comes back into the bottom of the 9th to get the first out. Romero then comes into the game to finish off the Yankees.

Phils win 7-1. Oh, what a feeling! They take 2 out of 3 in the series.

Consistency (sp?) is not Kendrick’s strong suit but , oh boy, it was joyful to pitch so well last night.

Hate to say it, but every time I heard Kendricks name I hear former teammate reminding him he was traded for a “Hot Dog eater” in that great practical joke from a few Spring Trainings ago.
Great to see he finally got to this level and his contributing some great things…with relish (bad pun).
But a guy like Kendricks can get you those extra “w’s” that might be the difference come October between going home, or packing for a Playoff series.
Hopes his curves stay wicked, and his fastball has massive movement….Do not want to see him traded for a Hot Dog eater ever again.
